PETROVO
Petrovo municipality is situated in the Northeastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, central part of Republic of Srpska respectively, at the foot of the Ozren Mountain, 25 km Southeast of Doboj. The population is mostly rural, unevenly dispersed, more concentrated in the flat and hilly area. Ethnic structure has not changed significantly since the last census was taken in 1991.
There are numerous institutions functioning in the municipality like, municipal and state governance bodies, public companies, police and army forces, communal services, schools, post office, etc.
The basic economic branches are rural agriculture with an accent on poultry production, cattle breeding for dairy purposes, traditional vegetable and crops production, green houses, etc. There are also traditional/domestic branches like brick making, middle phase wood processing, exploiting thermal spas and liquid CO2, production of building constructions and concrete elements, plastic packaging, etc. Other economic activities are related to hospitality industry, traffic, handicraft etc.
Ozren Mountain is rich in natural resources. It abounds in drinkable water springs surrounded by clean nature, thermal wells with healing effects, ore and mineral resources.
There are 1360 registered unemployed persons. The main capacities are wood processing industry, light chemical industry, cattle breeding and building material production.
Private sector is boosting mainly related to plastic, steel and wood processing. An important prospect for the municipality is agricultural production, especially of cooperative type because of the fruit and vegetable factory “Vegafruit”. There are 39 craftsman shops, 46 stores and 19 bars, restaurants or motels.
There are 7 local communities in Petrovo municipality, and the administrative center is situated in local community Petrovo. Five pilot local communities were included in MDP project since August 2003. Organized citizens group have gone through MDP phases of capacity building, problem prioritization and final project design. There are two registry offices on the filed and one in municipal building where citizens can request and receive certain documents like birth certificate, citizenship certificate, etc. Modern information system is not developed.
There are several NGOs in Petrovo, like youth organizations, “OZ-Petrovo” and “Svetosavska omladina”, ping-pong club “Kakmuz”, chess club “Ozren”, mountain trekking club, hunters’ club “Ozren”, sportsmen and fishermen’ club “Spreca”, humanitarian organizations “Milosrdje” from Sockovac-Karanovac and “Sveta Irina” from Kakmuz, culture club “Milovan Gajic” from Petrovo, women association “Ozrenka”, ecologists associations, agricultural associations and cooperative: “ZOP”, “Poljoprivrednik 04”, and “Jedinstvo-Ozren”. Youth association “OZ-Petrovo” is very active and open for cross-entity cooperation.
A joint inter municipal project of regional approach in waste management engaging five municipalities, Doboj, Doboj Jug, Usora, Maglaj and Petrovo is in the planning phase. Initiatives for a joint eco-project for Spreca River are in the process.
